Counseling is a second career for me that grew out of my volunteer work during the years as a corporate managed care consultant.
I began volunteering in the Catholic Charities "family preservation" program while enrolled in Rider University's Graduate program for Counselors, and obtained an MA degree in Counseling, followed by two years as a Family Therapist Intern and Marriage Counselor at Catholic Charities, followed by 3 more years as a full-fledged Family Therapist there.
After gaining much practical experience, and accumulating 3,000 hours of supervised training, I received my state license #PC002772(PA) and have now been in practice for over 15 years.
After Catholic Charities program was "de-funded," I continued a small private practice dedicated to couples counseling, which I find the most enjoyable and productive type of counseling.
Couples counseling makes sense because our emotional pain arises in our relationships. What better way to reduce emotional pain than from within our most important relationship. That is where real life is happening, and a committed relationship is an ideal vehicle for emotional healing, growing together instead of "growing apart"
I do not dispense "expert" advice, and I do not confront clients, or giving out "to do" lists.
I use a "structured dialogue" approach that creates an emotionally safe environment for a return of warmth, closeness, and respect. Most couples naturally adapt to the process and begin noticing a difference during the first or second session.
I don't view a relationship as "full of marriage problems." There is only one core problem: Loss of Warmth, Closeness, Respect, or Trust This root cause energizes all the other frustrations, resentments, disappointments and irritations.
With the structured dialogue, you are addressing the root cause, not merely the symptoms. As you begin to address the root cause, other problems naturally begin to fall away.
Long-standing difficulties and resentments in the relationship become less important, and begin to lose their energy.
• I focus on creating a respectful and balanced environment for couples.
• I use a "structured dialogue" approach where partners can engage each other gently, sincerely, and with respect.
• This naturally releases tension, opening the way for greater respect, trust, closeness, and warmth.
• The structured dialogue is easy to learn and do with your partner at home.
• Once respect, trust, closeness, and warmth begin to return, other problems tend to lose their urgency--and become easier to resolve.
• When counseling ends, you leave with the skills to use the structured dialogue at home to address any new issues as they arise.
• With these skills, you will be continually strengthening your relationship--and enjoying it more.
• For those wanting pre marital counseling, the structured dialogue can support your marriage in the same way, now and in the years to come.
